One of the most popular friendship songs from the last few decades is Graduation (Friends Forever) by Vitamin C.

Intro: And so we talked all night about the rest of our lives
Where we're gonna be when we turn twenty five
I keep thinking times will never change
Keep on thinking things will always be the same
But when we leave this year, we won't be coming back
No more hanging out 'cause we're on a different track
And if you got something that you need to say
You better say it right now 'cause you don't have another day ...
Chorus]
As we go on
We remember
All the times we
Had together
And as our lives change
Come whatever
We will still be
Friends forever
This song reminds me of my 8th grade graduation in middle school since it was played during the ceremony. It brought tears to many of the students' eyes thinking a few of their friends will go on to a different high school.
Then when friends left for college, almost all students were spread out to different locations; some in different cities, and some in entirely different states.
And now, as I sit and type here in Hong Kong, I realize friends continue spreading out and taking different directions in life each year they get older. This 'distance' may be because of proximity, change in common interests from one another, or simply, that you have moved on from your friendship.
How many friends do you stay in touch with from elementary school? Middle school? High school? College?
Although many of us change locations, jobs, hobbies, and beliefs, it's important to cherish the memories and to keep in touch with the friends who have made a positive impact in your life. This may mean sending them a quick hello on Facebook, calling them up every once in a while or even meeting them for coffee once a year. As I learned back in girl-scouts, 'Make new friends but keep the old. One is silver and the other's gold.'
And for those you don't remain in touch with, that's ok. Every friendship happens for a reason whether you realize it or not. People will go in and out of your lives numerous times, and I'm sure those people will touch you (or you them) in some special way, leaving a footprint in your life path. However it's important to reflect on and show appreciation to your friendships (old and new), so that we can understand the importance of friends/social wellness.
Today reflect on friends from your past. Open up your old yearbooks and cherish the memories. Call up or message ones who have inspired you but who you may have lost contact with. And reflect on how those who have walked in and out of your life have touched you (or you them) in some way.
